On December 15, the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) launched operations of two new metro lines, including the Red Line (Line 2) of the Riyadh Metro operated by RATP Dev, a subsidiary of RATP Group, marking another milestone in the development of the city’s public transport network. Following the successful launch of the Blue Line (Line 1) on December 1, RATP Dev, through its subsidiary CAMCO, a joint venture with SAPTCO, continues to play a pivotal role in the delivery of reliable, world-class service for this flagship project.
The Riyadh Metro is a state-of-the-art driverless public transportation system, to which RATP Dev has made a significant contribution, leveraging its proven track record in automated metro operations. Drawing on RATP Group’s 120 years of global expertise, RATP Dev delivers high-quality metro systems in cities like Paris, Doha, and soon Lyon, Sydney, the Greater Paris area, and Singapore.
The fully automated Red Line spans over more than 25 kilometers, connecting King Fahad Sport City to King Saud University with 15 stations, including an interchange with the Blue Line at the iconic STC station – as well as additional intersections with the network’s Green and the Purple Lines. Together, the Blue and Red Lines now cover 63 kilometers and 40 stations, enhancing connectivity and passenger convenience across Riyadh.
To ensure the Red Line is ready for operation, RATP Dev has mobilized 1,300 local CAMCO staff members (69% Saudi citizens and 36% women) trained to international standards in automated metro operations and customer service. The expert teams have worked hand in hand with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) and its partners throughout every stage of the project.
As part of a broader network of six lines totaling 176 kilometers and 85 stations, the Riyadh Metro serves as the backbone of the city’s public transport system. Seamlessly integrated with a bus network of 80 routes and 3 Bus Rapid Transit lines, also operated by RATP Dev’s joint venture PTC, this comprehensive mobility solution reduces urban congestion and supports the goals of Vision 2030, fostering sustainable mobility and infrastructure modernization.
