Our strategy

Our strategy of selective and sustainable growth is based on the development of urban rail and our key geographic zones, along with continued optimization of the operational, social, contractual, and extra-financial performance of our networks.

Specialist in urban rail

We are the specialist in dense networks and complex projects: be it designing and launching a new network, extending a line, modernizing or automating an existing network without interrupting a service that millions of people depend on every day, or hosting a major cultural or sporting event.

Metros and automated metros, commuter trains, trams, airport shuttles…

Between Paris and the rest of our worldwide operations, we have nearly 1,400 km already or soon to be up and running!

That includes 600 km of metro lines, which makes us the world leader in a fast-growing market, because of how we rise to challenges like the environmental emergency, rapid urbanization, social inclusiveness, and appealing to citizens, talented candidates, businesses, visitors, and major events.

From Europe to Asia-Pacific, as well as the Middle East and North America, we actively bid—alone or with the highest class of partners—for invitations to tender where we think we can apply our expertise and create value for our clients, their regions, and their communities. Thanks to this growth, the share of urban rail in our portfolio has nearly doubled in just a few years.

Geographic zones and multimodal transit

The historical cradle of RATP Dev is France, where we operate and maintain multimodal transit networks in over 50 French cities and regions.

Buses, trams, metros, and soon the TER regional rail service, in addition to Transit-on-Demand, river and maritime shuttles, cable-cars, and active modes of mobility, in France we have rolled out the full breadth of our expertise in all modes of transit and developed advanced expertise in taking over networks, both operationally and in terms of the workforce.

Following a series of successful bids, we have doubled our market share in just a few years and are recognized by organizing authorities as a specialist in taking over the reins without disruption.

In Saudi Arabia, we operate the two main automated metro lines of Riyadh’s brand-new network—the longest in the world—in addition to roughly 100 high service level bus routes in the capital.

The immense success of the new metro (over 150 million journeys in one year!), which carries men and women, students and executives, local residents and visitors, is emblematic of the impact that public transit can have on a city of eight million people. And our driverless shuttles bring tourists to the historical site of AlUla; one of the Kingdom’s greatest attractions for tourists from all over the world.

In the United States, where public transit is essential to regional socio-economic cohesion, we operate roughly 40 urban and intercity networks in 15 states - primarily bus routes, transit-on-demand, and transit for people with reduced mobility.

In Italy, we operate the network that weaves through the magnificent region of Tuscany. With 1,000 routes, it is the biggest regional bus network in Europe!

There, we are in the midst of a massive modernization project to gradually electrify the entire bus fleet, and we are working tirelessly to enrich the passenger experience.

That bus network recently became interlinked with the Florence tram network, which connects the airport and the city’s main attractions. We are assisting with successive extensions of that network to advance the development of sustainable modes of mobility in a historic city that is popular with tourists. We are also involved in the regional train network around Arezzo (in a joint venture), as well as—in case you hadn’t heard—shuttle buses to the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo!
