An ambitious modernisation plan to transform mobility in Belgrade

Belgrade has embarked on a vast plan to modernise its public transport network in order to provide the Serbian capital with infrastructure that meets international standards. Its objectives meet both environmental and economic development challenges: reducing the role of the car, improving suburban connections, making travel more fluid and improving the passenger experience while thinking about decarbonisation.

RATP Dev, a key partner for the first metro in the western Balkans

The “Beogradski Metro i Voz” (BMV) Metro Authority and the Public Transport Secretariat of the City of Belgrade entrusted RATP Dev, in 2023, with the role of upstream operator for the construction of this metro system - the very first metro project launched in the Western Balkans. This trust was renewed in 2024 to allow the completion of this strategic project for the entire country.

RATP Dev’s expertise in designing and operating networks ensures that Belgrade benefits from technical choices perfectly aligned with both current and future mobility challenges. Naturally, RATP Dev’s mission covers the entire value chain: operations and maintenance, safety, passenger experience, and lifecycle cost optimization.

The involvement of the RATP Group from the design phase in 2026, as the global leader in automated metro systems, is a decisive factor in the overall success of the project.

70 kilometers of lines to redesign the capital

The new network is based on three automated lines, which will be commissioned in stages starting in 2028. Nearly 70 kilometers of lines and 69 stations are currently in construction to ensure the necessary transfers with the bus and rail lines. The automated metro will radically transform mobility in the capital, connecting suburban neighborhoods, the historic downtown and business hubs. The ultra-modern network will also serve as a technological showcase for the city and country.
