Designing tomorrow’s mobility with the Suburban Rail Loop East in Melbourne

The Suburban Rail Loop East (SRL East) network is one of Melbourne’s most ambitious transport projects. Designed to connect major educational, medical, and economic precincts across the city, the line will be delivered as a modern, high-performance driverless metro system.

As a member of the Linewide Alliance, RATP Dev is contributing its operational expertise during the design phase and, alongside John Holland, will operate and maintain Victoria’s first driverless metro line starting in 2035.

Delivering a next‑generation metro for Melbourne

The Suburban Rail Loop East represents a transformative step in Melbourne’s long-term mobility future. As the first stage of a broader metropolitan rail loop, it is designed to strengthen connections between key economic, educational and precincts, improving accessibility and travel efficiency across the city.

Led by the Linewide Alliance — comprising RATP Dev, John Holland, Alstom, KBR and WSP — the system’s infrastructure, rolling stock and core technologies are being developed to deliver long-term reliability and operational excellence. Throughout the delivery phase, RATP Dev is embedding operational insight to ensure the network is designed for safety, maintainability, resilience, and the needs of future passengers.

Pioneering Victoria’s first driverless metro and regional growth

From 2035, the line will be operated and maintained by TransitLinX, the joint venture between RATP Dev and John Holland. As Victoria’s first driverless metro, it will feature high-frequency operations, advanced centralised control and world-class performance, drawing on RATP Dev’s global leadership in automated metro systems across cities such as Paris, Riyadh and Singapore.

Beyond improving mobility, SRL East will act as a catalyst for regional growth - supporting job creation, new housing opportunities and the development of connected economic precincts. By pairing cutting-edge transport technology with long-term social and economic outcomes, the project will play a significant role in shaping Melbourne’s resilience, productivity and livability for decades to come.
