Bringing to life the Ding Ding, Hong Kong's icon and one of the Asia's oldest electric tramways

In Hong Kong, RATP Dev combines operational excellence, innovation and heritage preservation by operating the Ding Ding, an emblematic tram that has been in operation since 1904.

Preserving a century-old heritage

Since 1904, Ding Ding has been crossing Hong Kong Island from east to west. It is therefore a network historically anchored in the hearts of Hong Kongers that RATP Dev has been operating since 2009, managing to meet a thorny challenge: to innovate for the benefit of the network and passengers without distorting the heritage value of a line equipped with unique double-decker trams.

RATP Dev has been managing the entire operation since 2020 (driving, maintenance, infrastructure, customer service), and maintains a part of the island's heritage: the teams manufacture in-house trams and components that are not available on the market, thus perpetuating more than a hundred years of know-how.

This does not prevent the injection of new technologies to strengthen safety (braking system improvement), traffic flow (control and regulation centre), comfort and convenience (latest-generation electronic payment system).

Looking to the future

RATP Dev is also opening up the network to the future, in particular by developing an innovative business model. The marketing of vehicle advertisements, the organisation of events (TramOramic Tour in 20s-style vehicles, privatisation for parties, etc.) and the exploitation of the brand around derivative products, including its new mascot, generated significant revenues.

These cover 50% of operating costs and make it possible to invest in the quality of service. Every day, 150,000 people embark on the Ding Ding, for a journey like no other.

Hong Kong residents are particularly attached to the tram, which they affectionately call the Ding Ding, and which is an integral part of Hong Kong.
