En 2001, la Province du Gauteng a lancé un appel d’offres pour la construction d’une ligne ferroviaire régionale entre Johannesburg et Pretoria. Le projet, baptisé Gautrain, a été confié au consortium Bombela, dans le cadre d’un Partenariat Public Privé.
Le consortium se charge des études de systèmes de transport, de la construction, de l’approvisionnement en équipements, de la maintenance, de l’exploitation et du financement.
Bombela regroupe Bouygues Construction, Bombardier Transport, SPG (groupement d’entreprises sud africaines qui représentent les intérêts du Black Economic Empowerment), Murray & Roberts et Ratp Dev.
La ligne nord-sud de 80 km comptera 10 stations et reliera Hatfield, dans la banlieue de Pretoria, à Johannesburg en 40 min à une vitesse maximale de 160 km/h. Elle sera également connectée à un réseau de navettes desservant l’aéroport international en moins de 15 minutes.
- Un réseau de bus viendra renforcer le système ferroviaire en assurant le transport des passagers jusqu’à 10 km autour des stations,
- Des parkings seront construits à proximité des stations pour encourager les gens à se déplacer en train.
L’exploitation et la maintenance de la ligne seront assurées par Ratp Dev et ses partenaires dans le cadre d’une société détenue en majorité par Ratp Dev pour une période de 15 ans.
In 2001, the Gauteng Province issued a call for tenders, which was awarded to the Bombela consortium, for the construction of a regional Johannesburg-Pretoria rail link (the Gautrain project) within a Public-Private Partnership.
The consortium is a Private/Public Partnership that handles transit system studies, construction, equipment supply, maintenance, operating, and financing.
Bouygues Construction, Bombardier Transportation, SPG (a group of South African firms that represents the interests of Black Economic Empowerment), Murran & Roberts, and Ratp Dev are part of Bombela.
An 80-km North-South rail network with 10 stations, connecting Hatfield in the suburbs of Pretoria to Johannesburg, in 40 minutes at a top speed of 160 km/hr, with a connection that will provide shuttle service to the area’s international airport in less than 15 minutes
- A bus network that will supplement the railway system by ensuring passenger distribution within a radius of 10 km around the stations.
- Car parks that will be built close to the stations to prompt people to use the transit system
The commercial commissioning date of the line is planned to coincide with that of the world’s Football Cup in June 2010.
Line operating and maintaining will be ensured by Ratp Dev and its South-African partners, within a company mainly held by Ratp Dev, for a 15-year duration.
