Algiers
Algeria
Like many other fast-growing cities, Algiers has been waiting for its new metro to alleviate congestion.
In 2006, RATP Dev and its sister engineering company Systra were selected to assist the contracting authority's, EMA (Entreprise du Métro d'Alger). RATP Dev and Systra formed the inter-company group CPE to monitor the studies (systems and rolling stock), evaluate the operating requirements, set up fixed installations and prepare for the launch.
In December 2007, EMA awarded RATP Dev the contract to commission and operate the new metro line for an 8-year period. The line will serve 60 million passengers per year with a fleet of 14 six-car sets and a capacity of 21,000 people per hour per direction. RATP Dev has mobilized senior experts to set-up the organization, draft rules and procedures, recruit and train the staff. The operation contract provides for the transfer of skills and expertise to its local Algerian managers. An extension is planned for 2012.
